Drapes v Curtains v Blinds

There are lots of ways to control natural light in your home.  Here are the four most common and how Store Urbain toile sur mesure can be both similar as well as different from each other.

In general, the term “drape” describes any large piece of fabric that you hang above a window in order to block the light.  Drapes tend to be thick and dark, too, of course.  Most of the time, this type of window treatment will run from the top of the window, all the way down to the floor.  Because they are so thick drapes can also be quite effective at trapping heat indoors during colder months; heat which would otherwise escape through the window pane. And also, because of their heft, drapes tend to carry quite a similarly hefty price tag.

Similar to drapes—perhaps because they are based on the simple design—curtains are also typically made of fabric, though more are made of cotton or other sheer/translucent materials.  While drapes are also often lined (improving their heft and their effect) curtains do not and, as such, provide far less privacy than drapes. Of course, because they let light through—even when closed—the effect is more for a smaller sense of privacy from the outside world, while remaining connected with it.  But because of the way they are made, they also tend to be a little more affordable than dark, heavy drapes. On the other hand, since they are light in feel and effect, you can also find curtains with different types patterns or designs, and many other variables that can make them more welcoming in a home.

Shades are also typically made of fabric and are also hung from above window via rod, much like both drapes and curtains. What makes a shade so different is that you just raise it or lower it. There are many different mechanisms for doing so. Similarly, shades come in different lengths, widths, designs, and effects.

Blinds can be made of fabric, too, but this fabric is typically woven around another material.  Indeed, more commonly, blinds are made from textiles like wood, bamboo, vinyl, and aluminum.  Blinds work by letting in light through slats which can tilt slightly or can be drawn like a shade, upward.  Blinds can be horizontal or vertical; they can also be of different thicknesses.
